The Landau theory of phase transitions has been re-examined under the framework of a modified mean field theory. By doing so, a generalized order parameter has been introduced and integrated into the Landau free energy. This generalized order parameter includes an orientational order parameter, which describes a partially ordered nematic phase generated by thermal fluctuations. It then turns out that it is the dynamic behavior of this nematic phase on approaching the critical point that makes the Landau theory deviate from experimental observations.
