A compact analytical formula for the free-energy of ligand-receptor
mediated interactions

Recently, some of us presented a general theory for calculating the strength and properties of colloidal inter- actions mediated by ligand-receptor bonds (such as those that bind DNA-coated colloids). In this short communication, we outline an important simplification in the implementation of our theory, which we expect will sig- nificantly broaden its scope. The interaction free energy is now expressed in closed form, rather than as a thermodynamic integral. As a result, the computational effort to obtain potentials of interaction is signicantly reduced. Moreover, we can gain insight from this analytic expression for the free energy in limiting cases. For instance, the connection of our general theory to other previous specialised approaches is made transparent.
