Half-Magnetization Plateau of a Dipolar Spin Ice in a [100] Field    [PDF]

We study the dipolar spin ice model in a magnetic field along the [100] by large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We find the dipolar interaction selects a new ground state with half of the saturated magnetization in certain field range. Upon increasing the field, the system goes through plateau transitions from a q=(001) ordered dipolar ice state, to the half-saturated state, and finally to the fully polarized q=(000) state. We discuss possible experimental signatures of this half-saturated state and propose a new route to reach the q=(001) ordered state experimentally.
